Gautam Adani's entrepreneurial DNA drove him to go from Ahmedabad. He traveled to Mumbai as a youngster in 1978 to work as a diamond sorter for the Mahendra brothers. He stayed for approximately two to three years to work because he wanted to achieve something significant. He had trouble settling down since he was a toddler. He began his diamond brokerage in Mumbai's Javari market for this purpose. At the age of 20, his first firm succeeded and he gained a large fortune. In 1981, his brother purchased a plastic facility and hired Gautam Adani to run it. He went back to Ahmedabad to assist his brother. This enterprise was a huge success and served as a springboard for his global trade of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) raw material for plastic production.

Gautam Adani began importing Polyvinyl Chloride for small-scale companies in 1985. He also went to South Korea to create a contract basis for the Adani group for the import of PVC. He founded the Adani group in 1988. He is the company's chairman. It began by trading with agricultural and electricity commodities. Adani's firm benefited greatly from economic liberalization initiatives implemented in the 1990s.

Gautam understood just how to capitalize on this advantageous situation, so he expanded his firm and began trading metals, textiles, and agricultural items. Gautam Adani founded Adani Transmission Limited, a power transmission firm, in December 2015. Its headquarters are located in Ahmedabad, India. Gautam Adani owns 75% of Adani Transmission. Gautam created Adani Green Energy Limited on January 23, 2015, with a desire to expand and benefit the people of India. AGEL and Inox wind initially collaborated to create a 20-megawatt wind generating facility in Madhya Pradesh. Adani Green Energy Limited is India's largest renewable energy firm, with a project capacity of 13,990 megawatts. The firm builds and runs solar and wind power networks. The power generated is given to government institutions and enterprises with government backing.

Gautam Adani is also involved in charitable initiatives. In 1996, he launched the Adani Foundation. He is the president, and his wife, Preeti Adani, is the director of the Adani Foundation. The foundation seeks to empower underprivileged people with education and economic resources, as well as to grow rural regions. Pretti Adani operates the Adani Vijayamander school in Ahmedabad, which accepts only pupils whose parents earn less than 1 lakh INR each year. The charity also provides financial assistance to fishermen. It not only educates their children but also equips them with fishing equipment. In 2012, the Adani Foundation took another significant step toward the future of youth by collaborating with India Skills. Their joint business has the goal of providing vocational training to the people of Gujarat. During the COVID crisis in March 2020, the foundation donated 100 crores to the PM Cares Fund, five crores to the Gujarat CM Relief Fund, and one crore to the Maharashtra CM Relief Fund.
